Why you should try to ‘not’ get signed

Why you should try to ‘not’ get signed

Don’t try to get signed.

Try to not get signed.

Eh?

Well think about it like this.

If you can get to the point where labels want to sign you, you must be doing something right.

You’re either making music that people want to hear or your starting to make money from your music. Or Both.

Labels, and any other investor for that matter, will only be interested in you if you’re already doing at least one if not both of those things.

Putting off signing to a label for as long as possible is a good idea for two reasons:

  1. You will earn 100% of the income generated from your music for as long as you can
  2. You will put yourself in a much stronger negotiating position when labels do come sniffing

That’s not to say that there won’t come a point in your career when signing to a label is the right thing to do.

But don’t aim to get signed.

Aim to not need to get signed by building a sustainable business on your own.
